Getting your contact centre up to speed

The UK contact centre is growing rapidly – more than 4% of the UK’s working population are employed at contact centres, and that number just increases year on year. The sector is also undergoing huge digital transformation.

Three years ago, Forrester issued a report entitled ‘Contact Centres Must Go Digital or Die,’ which outlined that firms’ technology and staffing plans are not keeping up with consumer demand for digital customer service.

The fact is that customer experience is paramount in order to stay competitive. So, put simply, for contact centres it’s a clear-cut situation – it’s gone digital or face huge customer churn. With these market factors in full force, cloud adoption isn’t just an option, it’s a necessity to enable multichannel functionality and a future-proofed business.

Customers want and expect a brand to have omnichannel communications capabilities. A traditional voice contact centre just doesn’t cut it anymore. The most straightforward way towards digital excellence points directly to cloud technology.

Modern customer communication services require solutions that can integrate all communications processes into a singular platform, whilst at the same time being adaptable to changing demands.

As technology advances, companies are realising that only cloud services provide the agility they need in order to adapt –with speed – to new clients, channels and requirements, hence the increasing demand for contact centre services from the cloud. With time and cost pressures increasing, contact centres are challenged to fulfil increasing customer demands and deliver even more business value in less time, and cloud solutions enable them to meet these ambitious goals.

Last year the UK Contact Centre Forum unveiled its latest Market Study, which outlined the findings of a survey that was conducted online amongst 102 UK contact centres. It found that 35% of contact centres still don’t have the technology to support multiple customer contact channels. That equates to thousands of contact centres that are yet to start their journey via the cloud and reap the productivity and functional benefits.

Safety in the cloud

When adopting cloud technology, security is one of the most critical issues. Many Organizations still fear that their data is not secure in the cloud environment.

Everyone always thinks “It cannot happen to me.” The reality is, no network is 100% safe from hackers.

According to the Kaspersky Lab, ransomware rose by over 250% in 2018 and continues to trend in a very frightening direction.

Companies want to apply the same level of security to their cloud systems as their internal resources. It is essential to understand and identify the challenges of outsourcing data protection in the cloud.

How do you start securing your data in the cloud?

  • Accept that it may only be a matter of time before someone breaches your defences, plan for it.
  • Do not assume your data in the cloud is backed up.
  • Enable two-factor authentication and IP-location to access cloud applications.
  • Leverage encryption. Encrypt data at rest.
  • The human element is among the biggest threats to your security.
  • Implement a robust change control process, with weekly patch management cycle.
  • Maintain offline copies of your data to in the event your cloud data is destroyed or held ransom.
  • Contract with 24×7 security monitoring service.
  • Have an incident response plan.
  • Utilize advanced firewall technology including WAF (Web Access Firewalls).
  • Take advantage of application services, layering, and micro-segmentation.
